Applying for British Citizenship as an
EEA National
To apply for British citizenship as an EEA national, you’ll need to complete an online form. For those living in the UK, this is often the Form AN for naturalisation. The application requires you to answer all relevant questions and can be edited before you submit it.
Required Documents
You’ll need to provide several documents with your application. While this isn’t a full list, the key documents include:
- Your passport or travel document, and a valid identity card if you have one.
- Proof of your English language proficiency.
- Your Life in the UK test pass certificate.
- Proof of your EU Settled Status.
- Your marriage or civil partnership certificate, if applicable
What to Do If Your Application Is Refused
There are several advantages to becoming a British citizen, including peace of mind knowing your right to remain in the UK is secure. Other benefits include:
- The ability to travel in and out of the UK without restrictions.
- The right to vote in all local and general elections.
- Eligibility for all state benefits and healthcare.
What to Do If Your Application Is Refused
If your application is refused, it’s often due to an incorrectly filled-out form or missing documents. You have a few options if this happens:
- Submit a new application.
- Request that your application be reconsidered (a fee may apply).
- Challenge the decision through a judicial review.
Citizenship Ceremony and Dual Nationality
If your application is successful and you’re over 18, you will likely be invited to a citizenship ceremony. This is a mandatory step, and the fee for it is included in your application. You can bring two guests to the ceremony.
The UK allows for dual citizenship, so you generally don’t have to give up your original citizenship. However, it’s a good idea to check with your country’s embassy or consulate, as some countries have different rules.
