What is a civil partnership?
It’s a legally recognized union between two people, available to both same-sex and opposite-sex couples. Civil partners have the same legal rights as married couples in areas such as tax, pensions, and inheritance. It is formalized by signing a ‘civil partnership document’ in front of a registrar and two witnesses.
Who can register for a civil partnership?
Both partners must be at least 16 years old. Those aged 16–17 need parental consent. You must have lived in the same district in England or Wales for at least seven days before giving notice, cannot already be married or in a civil partnership, and cannot be closely related.
How do you register for a civil partnership?

The process includes:


 1. Plan your ceremony: Choose your venue before giving notice.



 2. Give notice: Sign a legal declaration at your local register office stating your intent to form a civil partnership, at least 29 days before the ceremony.


 3. Register: Sign the civil partnership document with a registrar and two witnesses at an approved venue.

At your local register office. If you live in different districts, you must give notice separately. If either of you is from outside the EU/EEA, you must give notice together at a designated register office.

The standard notice fee is £35 per person, increasing to £47 if either partner is from outside the EU/EEA and subject to immigration control. A civil partnership certificate is issued after registration.
