Your Questions About the 10-Year ILR Route Answered

Understanding the Main Criteria

What do I need for ILR under long residence?

To apply successfully, you must:

o Have legally resided in the UK for at least 10 continuous years.

o Have complied with the conditions of all your visas.
o Show English language ability at Level B1.

o Pass the Life in the UK test.

o Meet continuous residence rules on time spent outside the UK.

What are the continuous residence rules?
You must not have been abroad for more than 540 days total in 10 years, and no single trip can exceed 180 days. There are exceptions in certain situations, but it’s vital to explain all absences clearly.
How is this route different from other ILR categories?
Unlike routes linked to specific visas (e.g., work or spouse), the 10-year route is based purely on your total lawful stay. You can combine time spent on different visa types, but time as a visitor, short-term student, or seasonal worker won’t count.

How to Apply

What’s the process?
You must fill in the SET(LR) online form, submit it to UKVI with your supporting evidence and biometrics, and ensure all information is correct.
Which documents are required?

Commonly needed documents include:

o Current passport and all old travel documents.

o Proof of current immigration status (BRP).

o A full record of absences over the last decade.

o Evidence you meet the English language standard.

o Proof you passed the Life in the UK test.If any old passports are missing, alternative evidence will be required to prove continuous residence.
